Low Maintenance Plants for the Plant Lover

Hi, Robin here, I just counted and I have 11 different varieties of houseplants in my home.  ELEVEN!  I’m happy to say that through trial and error, I’ve been able to keep them all alive and healthy for some time now. Adding plant life to my home provides natural air purifiers, brings the outdoors in, and adds just the right amount of greenery and texture to my decor.

The stress relieving qualities that plant care boasts hasn’t always been a thing for me though.  Keeping high maintenance plants alive totally stressed me out until I found a few that required very little TLC.

My 3 favorites right now are the very popular “snake plant”, a newly acquired wavy fern, and a ponytail palm (actually 5 of them put together in a planter).

1. THE SNAKE PLANT

You’ve probably seen the snake plant all over the place - it’s very popular in home decor right now, but I love it because it’s really not that fussy of a plant.  Low light? Great! Sunny spot? Great!! This plant can tolerate both.

It also doesn’t need much watering- so if you forget one week-- NBD. Another quality about this plant it it’s vertical growth- ideal for small spaces. I bought this one at STUMP in Van Aken and have my eye on another variety there too. I just want to collect them all.

2. PONY TAIL PALM

My second favorite- because it’s name is so girly and fun is the Ponytail Palm-  Mine looks a bit different than what you might see if you google it because I have 5 “bulbs”? In one pot.  It gives the plant a totally different look, and opposite of the snake plant- it makes it have more volume.  Everyone likes a high volume ponytail, right? I also love plants that give a softer, or fluffier texture and I think the group of palms here really achieve that.  I keep this plant in my bathroom and I ALWAYS forget to water it and it still keeps growing. Ponytail palm for the win!

3.CRISPY WAVE FERN

The most recent addition to my collection is this little Wavy Fern.  So far it’s been pretty easy to care for.  It likes indirect light, so I keep it in a corner in my kitchen and it likes frequent, light waterings-- another reason to keep it in my kitchen since it’s where I spend most of my time at home.

It’s been really nice taking care of these guys while we have been hunkering down here at home.  I’ve actually had time to repot plants that were getting too big, and since I haven’t had a manicure since March-(eek!)  I’m not ruining my nails while playing in the dirt.  It’s so therapeutic.  Anyone else out there a plant lady like me?
